YWCA Honors Darien, Norwalk Women Of Distinction | The Darien Daily Voice.
The event honored and celebrated the achievements of women who stand out in the community for their efforts to make a difference. The women honored embody the ideals held by the YWCA organization of eliminating racism and empowering women and recognize their accomplishments as role models, leaders, pioneers and mentors, the group said. Ellen Kirby, executive director of the YWCA Darien/Norwalk, welcomed more than 300 business, community and family members to the luncheon. Dawn Crouch, Kristin Calve and Erin McMurray-Killealea were co-chairs for the event. Jeanne Yurman and Julie Forsyth presented the honorees.

Pepperidge Farm’s contribution to the Norwalk Community has been recognized by awards from the Human Services Council, the CT Food Bank, The Carver Foundation of Norwalk, and induction into the Chairman’s Circle of the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County.

Carver Seniors win the Natalia Rodriguez ELL Scholarship
Sarahfina Strackman and Smana Seradieu, Norwalk High School seniors, are winners of the 5th Annual Natalia Rodriguez ELL (English Language Learner) Scholarship, each receiving $500.
Sarahfina and Smana will both be attending Southern Connecticut State University. They are winners at Carver as well, for years. Involved in many Carver initiatives, from the NicaPhoto activity with and visit to peers in Nicaragua to all the other opportunities offered by Carver’s Youth Development Program.
Ms. Natalia Rodriguez passed away in 2008, after a 33-year career serving Norwalk Public Schools. Her most recent post was as the Bilingual Parent Coordinator in the Central Office where she helped hundreds of immigrant families adjust to their new lives in America.
Sarahfina and Smana did not speak English when they arrived from Haiti and were enrolled in West Rocks Middle Schools. Today they are scholars winning scholarship awards!

My name is Ana Lucia and I’m the vice-president of an anti-bullying awareness club at Norwalk High School called Peace Works. This week we premiered our very own public service announcement at school, which was written and made by our club members. They brainstormed various ideas and wrote multiple scripts before choosing the one they liked best to film. It’d be great if you guys could share our video to the Norwalk community through your FB to help our anti-bullying campaign. I’m aware that many of our club members and students who have participated in our projects are kids who go to the Carver. Thanks so much for the opportunities you give our club members!

The YWCA Darien/Norwalk will honor six local women who have made significant contributions to our community at the fourth Annual YWCA Women of Distinction Awards & Luncheon on Thursday, May 16 at Woodway Country Club in Darien. The Women of Distinction Award is bestowed in recognition of the outstanding achievements of a select group of women who demonstrate the spirit of the YWCA’s brand vision to empower women. This year’s honorees are: Louise Parker Berry, Katie Farren (Young Woman of Distinction), Rita Ferri, Novelette Peterkin, Sueann Schorr, Ciara Thurlow and Babs White (distinguished service award).
