Carver basketball stars competing on the road and at home

Standard

Three Carver teams earned a spot to compete in the National AAU tournaments this summer. A beloved private donor funded the hefty cost of sending each of our teams across the country to represent Norwalk.  Our 5th grade team achieved a strong finish. They lost in their final championship game. The 8th grade team competed in Orlando and was eliminated after winning two games and losing three. The 9th grade team is off to a strong start by winning their first two games in Las Vegas. They beat a Colorado team 61 to 25 and just beat a California team 68 to 48. Our fingers are crossed that they will bring a national title to home to Norwalk! More updates soon!

We do not have photos of the super Carver teams competing on the national level, but here in the Carver Community Center, Carver’s Summer Run program invites youth to spend their evenings driving the ball to the rim!

BOO! New Canaan Family & Friends Bring Halloween Spirits to Life for Carver Kids

Samantha Smith and Julianne Handy lead the kids to the dance floor!

Robbie and Samantha Smith and their schoolmates and friends from Saxe Middle School and New Canaan High School brought a spooktacular Halloween celebration to the Carver Center this past Thursday!
Joining Robbie and Samantha in all the fun and creativity were fellow New Canaan Saxe Middle School students Patrick Blasco, Julianne Handy, Audrey Kirkpatrick, and Abigail Neugeboren, and New Canaan High School student Matthew Blasco.
Specially baked and wrapped Halloween cookies, mountains of pizza, and an orange cotton candy machine were just a few of the flourishes that made Halloween 2011 a permanent happy memory for hundreds of Carver kids and their families.
The imported wonderland of amusement included Carnival games of chance, a Face Painter, Shrek and Scooby Doo performers, and, most amazing of all, a three-story high (and wide) Wild One inflatable Roller Coaster obstacle course that filled a third of the Carver gym! A DJ kept the kids and adults alike dancing throughout the evening.
“Halloween is a great time for kids to show their creativity because there are no rules — the holiday goes wherever your imagination takes you,” said Janine Smith, Carver board member,  longtime volunteer, and the evening’s benefactor. “The Carver kids were simply brilliant this year with their costumes and, as always, their joy is priceless.”
Carver’s Youth Development Program created a Haunted House on Carver’s second floor that made even the oldest kids cry for relief and escape as they screamed and recoiled their way through the maze of frightening images, spider webs, and Youth Development Program staff and youth leaders dressed in inspired costumes lurching out of hidden corners!
“Halloween is one of my favorite holidays,” said Samantha Smith. “I asked my family and friends to join me in making this year’s celebration one to remember for Carver where I love to help out whenever I can. Judging the Costume Contest is what I will remember most.”
