Thanks to wonderful support from GE Capital, Shakespeare on the Sound brought Shakespeare’s heightened language, beautiful wordplay and piercing stories into the lives of Carver kids for a week this past July.
In addition to their much celebrated annual free outdoor Shakespeare festival in Connecticut, with performances in public parks in Rowayton and Greenwich, Shakespeare on the Sound delivers year-round education programs in schools and local libraries – and to Carver kids!
Shakespeare on the Sound helped Carver campers explore Shakespeare’s language in an accessible way without losing any of its magic and to use interdisciplinary techniques such as art, movement and music to examine the ways in which the play, “Much Ado About Nothing,” deals with rumor, slander and intimidation. For Carver kids, that translated into addressing issues of peer pressure and bullying. Campers participated in and developed their own scenes with the Shakespeare on the Sound Apprentice Company, such as Claudio and Hero being torn apart by a Facebook picture with the wrong “tag.”
Carver campers gained in literacy, dramatic expression, critical thinking and reasoning — and in having a wonderful experience!
The Teaching Artists for Shakespeare on the Sound were Emily Bryan, PhD, Managing Director; Claire Kelly, MA (Theater Education, NYU), and Scott Bartelson, BS (Theater Education). Shakespeare on the Sound Apprentice Company included Kyle Radler, Marguerite McHale, KC Morse, Cordelia Diamond, Kiana Khozein. Brilliant, gifted, and committed to their mission, one and all!
